Sugar Loaf Mtn. and International Trails Day

2012 Int. Trails Day, June 2nd.

Each year on International Trails Day, Hike the Highlands Festival Society gives back to the community with work on trails. Last year, 2011, volunteers hiked Cape Smokey trail, widen the trail and cleared the views at the end.  In 2012, the festival chose Sugar Loaf Mountain as it project. This trail required a bit more work as the trail has grown in several spots, some windfalls, and the views were being blocked by trees at the top of the peak.  The views were cleared at the peak and the trail widened.  Another half day or so of work and the trail will be completed.

Sugar Loaf Mountain is one the classics, hiking trails, in the Hike the Highlands Festival, almost 1400 feet high and 4 plus km return. The trail was featured in the first Cape Breton Highlands 3 Peaks Challenge in 2010 and returns in 2012 as the last peak to hike.  The 3 Peaks Challenge requires teams of 4 hikers, to hike 3 mountains in one day. The event was patterned quite a bit after the UK 3 peaks Challenge.  Below are some recent photos of Sugar Loaf Mountain during International Trails Day.
