Stay in shape this Winter – Snowshoe

Snowshoeing on Red Island Hiking Trail

Snowshoeing on Red Island Hiking Trail ( MacDonald's Pond photo) - PS. Buck Saw was for trimming branches & small windfalls that day on the hiking trail.

It is a new year and with it comes goals & resolutions. Mine are simple – stay healthy and be physically active. One of the great ways to enjoy winter is to take part in outdoor activities.  Three popular outdoor physical activities are skating, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

More and more people are taking up snowshoeing as it is a great aerobic workout, You can work the arms, shoulders & back muscles (poles) and legs.  It is a great sport for hikers as you are using the same muscles especially if you use poles for descending & ascending .

Some great resources out their for snowshoeing are 1) the Snowshoeing newsletter by Annapolis County Recreation Dept. in Nova Scotia, b) Snowshoe Magazine  ,  and c) Quebec Tourism,  E-Magazine- Snowshoeing so cool.   The Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia and Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, Red Island Hiking Trail, Indian Brook,  as well Northern  Cape Breton  are popular snowshoeing locations in Atlantic Canada .  Take time to enjoy the great outdoors this winter on trails or make your own.
