Red Island Hiking Trail – Loses a Great Volunteer, Leader & Friend

Red Island Hiking Trail

Red Island Hiking Trail lost one of its great volunteers, leader and friend recently, John Graham MacInnes, who died at the age of 61.  John Graham was a tireless volunteer in the community, a municipal councillor for 23 years who held the positions of Deputy Warden and Warden for the Municipality of Victoria County, a teacher for 34 years and clerk of the session at St. Ann’s Bay United Church.  He helped developed the trail a number of years ago with other volunteers and made sure regular maintenance and improvements were done each year. Recently, the trail received some funding for a trailhead sign, some interpretative panels and trail improvements. The trail will be ready for the 2009 hiking season.

Mr. MacInnes received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for his volunteer work in the community in 2002. He will be missed by all of us in the communities along the North Shore and St. Ann’s Bay.  The Red Island Hiking Trail has been a part of the Hike the Highlands Festival for a number of years and is expected to be included in the 2009 schedule of hikes.
