Red Island Trail – Snowshoe Hike, Feb 16th

One of my favorite trails for snowshoeing in the winter is the Red Island Trail at Indian Brook, along the Cabot Trail in Victoria County. Why ?  Because it is nearby, 4km long, but provides you with 3 bodies of water – Barachois River, Atlantic Ocean and MacDonald’s pond and lots of great photo opportunities. Brought 3 cameras with me this time.

I do the trail counter clock-wise. The first part of the trail is easy to navigate but once you get to the ocean and the MacDonald’s Pond you can easily get off the trail because of the snow. I follow the ocean & pond and then I can easily pick the trail up again.  On Feb. 16th got off the trail 3 times but found my way back.
Note: the trail is easy to follow in the summertime.

It was a nice sunny day with very little wind…but the snow was deeper than I expected. I was breaking trail and sinking 4-6 inches. On the MacDonald’s Pond side there were lots of drifts forcing me to walk on side angles but I was ok as I brought my poles for balance. The trail did not disappoint and I was able to take lots of photos. Highly recommended it. Be careful in the spring, sometimes there is a stream running thru the gulch not far from the start of the trail. See first couple of photos below.

Below are a few photos I took that day on Red Island Trail.
