The first week in July brought some extremely hot temperatures…to the Highlands of Cape Breton – 30 plus degrees. Hiking in Hot weather requires hikers to be well prepared, understand & minimize the risks. Below are some tips for you.

1) Hike on shorter trails….know the trail you hiking on
2) Take lots of breaks …in the shade ( see above photo)
3) Take lots of water – take two bottles of water.
4) Hike in a polyester t-shirt not cotton. Polyester wicks the moisture away from your body while cotton holds it.
5) Take lots of snacks….your body burns lots of calories while keeping you cool.
6) Make sure you hike with a hat, sunglasses and put sunscreen on accordingly  ie. every 30 minutes etc.
7) Do not stay in open areas where the sun is hot. Move on.
8) Enjoy a dip in the water afterwards ie. the ocean, lake, river etc. and cool down.
