Cape Chignecto Coastal Hiking Trail

A trail system that has caught my eye for the past few years has been the  Cape Chignecto Provincial Park – a wilderness hiking park.  The park officially opened in 1998 with eight trails for hikers to enjoy including the Cape Chignecto Coastal Trail.  This provincial park is managed by Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association (CREDA) and a community based management board.  There are day hikes and overnight hikes with campsites, cabin and a bunkhouse for accommodations. The park opens May 18 until October 8th. The park features two visitor centres – Eatonville, and Red Rocks. You will pay a park entry fee as well camping fee if you stay overnight at a campsite, cabin or bunkhouse.

The Cape Chignecto Coastal Trail is approximately 51 kms beginning and ending at Red Rocks Trail head and can be completed in 3-4 days.  Known for great views, towering cliffs 600 ft rising up from Bay of Fundy, world’s highest tides, beaches and coastal scenery. It looks like a great trail for landscape and nature photography – wide angle and panorama photos.

You should have good hiking boots and a 55 + litre backpack along with the appropriate gear to do this hike with a friend. I am hoping to convince a few people like my nephew to hike this trail with me. Wish me luck. This will be a great warmup for the fall Hike the Highlands Festival in September along the Cabot Trail, on Cape Breton Island.
