Trail Etiquette during COVID-19

It is important to be kind to others and respect their space while hiking during COVID-19.  Some hikers get physical & social distancing, others don’t. Some see signs at the trail head, others don’t. Important to be prepared and to know the trail – 1)is it an in and out trail or 2)is it a looped trail? An in and out trail , you are going to run into people passing by, while a looped trail is less chance.

Here are some tips for trail etiquette during COVID-19
1) Hike early in the morning to avoid people and the heat. If the parking lot is full, find another trail.
2) Physical distancing – 6 feet between each hiker on the trail. Dr. Strang, Nova Scotia Chief Medical Officer recommends
to stay 8 feet behind a hiker while hiking to avoid droplets.  Use your hiking poles and arms to measure distance. Go single file on the trail
3) If you meet a hiker, step off the trail – 6 feet. Hikers going up a hill have the right -a-way . If you do not have 6 feet, put a mask on, bandana or neck
warmer over your mouth and nose. Do not touch your face. You can say hi to a hiker but don’t spend time chatting.
4) When the hike is over put hiking gear in the car and go. Do not mingle in groups. Parking is limited, allow other hikers to have a parking spot.

Remember be kind to others and respect their space.
