Hottest July on Record

This month of July, 2023 was the hottest month on record, with 70% of days or more  over 30 degrees with humidity on Cape Breton Island. Hikers need to know how to hike in this weather or they will suffer from heat exhaustion or Heat stroke.  ( See Symptoms of Heat exhaustion & heat stroke to left.)

Tips on hiking in hot weather – 1) Hike early in the morning, Don’t hike from 10 am. – 2 pm.,  2) Takes lots of breaks in the shade, 3) Drink & bring lots of water, 4) Wear a hat & sunglasses, 5) Take & eat lots of snacks – granola bars, trail mix, energy bars. You burn more energy when it is hot. The body is working harder to keep you cool. 6) Wear polyester or merino wool t-shirts when  it is hot.  They will keep you cooler than cotton t-shirts.
